The City of Kavala
Kavala is one of the most charming ports in Greece. With its unique location between the mountains and the sea, it is a destination full of history, culture and natural beauty.
The city today
"Blue City" with crystal clear coastline, world heritage monuments, dreamy views, Mediterranean cuisine, relaxed walks, short trips to islands, picturesque villages and mountains. Built amphitheatrically along the sea, at the crossroads of East and West, Kavala invites you to discover it.
Blue city, with clear blue waters, sandy beaches, a huge coastline and organised or unexplored coasts, with tavernas by the sea and unexpectedly beautiful spots.

History
Its geographical position, its natural harbour and its proximity to the gold-bearing Pangeo Mountain make it one of the oldest coastal cities of the wider region, with traces of it being lost in the depths of prehistory.
It is to this city that the Apostle Paul arrives to teach the message of Christianity for the first time in Europe in 49 AD and baptizes Lydia, the first European Christian, on the banks of the Zygaktes River.
On the triangular peninsula of the hill of Kavala, until 1864, the old city was confined to the triangular peninsula, which was a continuation of the ancient Neapolis and the Byzantine Christopolis.

Ancient theatre of Philippi
The ancient theatre of Philippi is located in the ancient city. The ancient city is located in eastern Macedonia, specifically in the Regional Unit of Kavala, in the area formerly called Krinides.
The city of Philippi was founded in 360 BC as a colony of the Thasians and occupied a strategic position. In 356 BC Philipos II conquered the city, completed its fortification and renamed it Philippi. The first phase of the ancient theatre dates back to this period. The city developed into one of the most important in Macedonia.

Fortress (Castle) of Kavala
The Fortress (Castle) of Kavala is built on the top of the peninsula of Panagia, at the location "Akropolis". It was built in 1425 on the ruins of the Byzantine Acropolis of Christopolis, which was destroyed in 1391.
It is a fortified enclosure, which follows the shape and slope of the ground and is divided into two parts by a transverse wall. The walls are reinforced by two square towers, a polygonal one, approximately in the middle of the eastern ridge and a bastion in the SE corner. The purpose of the fortress was to control the passage of the Egnatia road.

Beaches
Kavala has numerous beaches, rest areas and hiking trails. Within its urban fabric there are 4 organised beaches. To the west, the beach of Rapsani, the municipal beach of Kalamitsa and the multi-purpose beach of Batis. Further west, if you follow this street you will find the wonderful organized or unorganized, large and small beaches of Palio, Nea Iraklitsa, which is a beautiful, picturesque little village and Nea Peramos. Then there are Ammolofoi with its turquoise waters and wonderful sandy beaches.

Old Town
A walk in the Old Town of Kavala is an experience that you want to live and relive: walking through the cobbled alleys, taking in the magnificent view, reading favourite readings, tasting flavours and smells, discovering the successive layers of the long journey of a city that, among other things, has plenty of rich stories to tell.

Arches
The most characteristic monument of Kavala is the large arched aqueduct, known by the name "Kamares", 270m long and with a maximum height of 25m. At the beginning of the 16th century, the arid peninsula of Panagia was supplied with water from the area of Old Kavala. The "Kamares" in its present form is a work of the early 16th century attributed to Ibrahim Pasha, vizier to Sultan Suleiman the Lawgiver. They were built between 1520-1530, a period during which major infrastructure works were carried out in Kavala.
