The Emerald Route: A Day at the Hidden Gems of Thassos
Our journey begins in the morning at 08:00, every Thursday and Saturday, from the picturesque port of Kavala. As our traditional wooden boat leaves the dock, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the unique, amphitheatrical view of the Old Town and the imposing Castle fading into the horizon while sailing the deep blue waters of the North Aegean. To start our day as pleasantly as possible, we welcome you with aromatic coffee, tea, cool water, and fresh fruit, while the notes of beloved Greek songs set the rhythm and promise to lift your spirits from the very first miles of the route.
Our first stop, around 09:40 and after a relaxing sail, is Thassos’ hidden “gem,” Glyfoneri. We drop anchor offshore in a windless, natural bay where dense pine trees literally touch the sea, creating a color palette of deep green and emerald. For about 40 minutes, you will have the chance to dive from the boat’s ladders into the crystal-clear waters, enjoying the morning serenity far from the crowds.
Next, we set a course for the “heart” of the island, Limenas, arriving around 10:30. We dock at the capital’s port for about an hour and a half to two hours, giving you plenty of time for exploration. We suggest walking to the emblematic “Karnagio” at the edge of the port for a coffee literally on the waves. For history lovers, the Archaeological Museum is just a stone’s throw away, hosting rare treasures from antiquity, while the Ancient Theater stands impressively just above.
Alternatively, you can wander through the picturesque alleys of the market. It is the ideal opportunity to pick up the gastronomic treasures of the land: the famous walnut spoon sweet (karydaki), pure thyme honey, excellent virgin olive oil, as well as traditional halva and syrupy saragli that will sweeten your memories.
Leaving civilization behind, we sail for the day’s most exotic experience: the famous Marble Beach (Saliara), which we approach around 12:30. The landscape here changes dramatically, as the seabed’s all-white marble pebbles give the sea a rare, tropical turquoise color that magnetizes the eye, offering the perfect backdrop for swimming and photos.
The experience concludes gastronomically at the neighboring, lush green bay of Vathy, where we anchor around 13:45. In this windless haven of tranquility, the scent of the BBQ will whet your appetite. The crew prepares a rich meal right before your eyes with freshly grilled meats, cool salads, and appetizers. The meal is accompanied by abundant wine and soft drinks, which you enjoy on board, surrounded by nature. After lunch and relaxation on deck with seasonal fruit, we take the return route, arriving at the port of Kavala approximately at 17:00, full of images and flavors from authentic Thassos.
